Gwar is an American heavy metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1984, known for their outrageous science fiction-inspired costumes and over-the-top stage shows. Operated by a collective of musicians, artists, and filmmakers called Slave Pit Inc, Gwar's members take on the personas of savage interplanetary warriors as part of an ongoing mythology woven through their albums and performances. Their concerts are infamous for graphic theatrical violence and satire, often involving the audience in blood-soaked, provocative spectacle. Despite the loss of founding frontman Dave Brockie in 2014, the group continues to record and tour with new members. Gwar has released multiple studio and live albums, cultivated a devoted cult following, and expanded into film, comics, games, and branded products, making them icons of shock rock and alternative culture.
