Jerry Cantrell, born March 18, 1966, is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter, best known as the founder, lead guitarist, and main songwriter of Alice in Chains. Key to the band's distinctive harmonized vocals, Cantrell rose to prominence in the early 1990s as part of Seattle’s grunge movement alongside original vocalist Layne Staley, and later William DuVall. Following Staley’s passing, Cantrell became the primary singer for Alice in Chains, contributing to the albums Black Gives Way to Blue, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, and Rainier Fog. In addition to his work with the band, Cantrell has released solo albums including Boggy Depot, Degradation Trip, Brighten, and I Want Blood. Renowned for his guitar riffs and songwriting, Cantrell has collaborated with artists like Heart, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Pantera, Pearl Jam, and many others. He has received nine Grammy nominations and top rankings from music publications such as Metal Hammer and Guitar World. Beyond his music, Cantrell has contributed to several film soundtracks and made cameo appearances in movies and TV projects.
