Candido

Candido

Cándido Camero Guerra, known as Cándido, was a legendary Cuban percussionist and a major figure in Afro-Cuban jazz. Renowned for his groundbreaking innovations, he introduced the tuneable conga drum to wider audiences and was the first to develop techniques for playing multiple congas at once. He also pioneered the use of a multiple percussion setup, skillfully combining instruments like congas, bongos, cowbell, and guiro, all performed by one musician. After moving to New York in 1946, he collaborated with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Taylor, and Stan Kenton. In the late 1970s, he achieved commercial success with his disco recordings for Salsoul. Cándido continued to perform and record into his late years, earning a Grammy nomination for his work with Graciela.
