Art Blakey & Jazz Messengers

The Jazz Messengers were a legendary jazz ensemble founded in the early 1950s and led for over three decades by iconic drummer Art Blakey. Renowned for their hard bop sound, the group became a launching pad for emerging jazz talent, with new generations of young musicians passing through the lineup. Many alumni, including Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, and Branford Marsalis, went on to become leading figures in jazz. The group’s legacy is defined by its dynamic spirit, rich catalogue, and its vital role in shaping the direction of modern jazz. The Jazz Messengers continued under Blakey’s leadership until his passing in 1990.
