Vox VT20X Modeling Combo Amp — Real Tube Feel in a Compact 20 W Combo

The Vox VT20X is a 20 W hybrid modeling combo that brings genuine tube character into a desk-friendly format. A 12AX7 multi-stage tube preamp paired with VET (Virtual Element Technology) modeling delivers the touch sensitivity and harmonic complexity that purely digital emulations struggle to match. A custom 8" VOX speaker in a sealed bass-reflex cabinet adds room-filling resonance.

What Sets the VTX Series Apart from Other Modeling Combos

Most modeling amps rely entirely on DSP. This model layers a multi-stage Valvetronix tube preamp on top of its digital engine, so the signal passes through a real 12AX7 before modeling is applied. A Class A / Class AB selector and Bias Shift (cold / standard / hot) shape the response curve, while the free VOX Tone Room editor for Mac, PC, iOS, and Android adds deep customization.

Power Amp and Speaker Configuration

A variable Power Level knob scales the 20 W RMS output from bedroom-quiet to small-stage loud, while the dedicated 8" VOX speaker translates the tube preamp's harmonic content accurately.

• The output power provides 20 W RMS @ 5 ohms, adjustable via the Power Level knob for any volume scenario.
• Speaker: 1 x 8" VOX custom driver, 5 ohms — sealed cabinet with bass-reflex port for tight low-end response
• Power Supply: AC adapter (DC 12 V) — included in the box, no batteries required

Amp Models, Effects, and Programs

Eleven on-board amp models span clean American Deluxe and Tweed 4x10 through VOX AC30, AC30TB, British 800, British OR MKII, Double Rectifier, Boutique Clean, British 1959, and Boutique Metal. Tone Room via USB unlocks 20 amp models and 60 programs. Effects split into two pedal slots plus reverb and noise reduction, with tap-tempo sync.

Connections, Controls, and Signal Processing

Volume, Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble, Effect, Power/Rhythm Level, and Preset Select/Store Select/Store give direct access to the most-used parameters. 24-bit A/D and D/A conversion preserves the 12AX7 preamp's dynamic range.

• Inputs and outputs include INPUT, AUX IN, Headphone, FOOT SW, and a USB (Type B) mini port for silent practice, backing tracks, preset switching, and computer editing.
• Front-Panel Controls: Volume, Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble, Effect, Power/Rhythm Level, Preset Select / Store Select / Store — plus Amp Model selector, Value 1 / Value 2 knobs, Class A / AB switch, and Bias Shift
• Signal Processing & Build: 24-bit A/D and D/A conversion; 410 x 225 x 347 mm; 7.3 kg — high-resolution capture of the tube preamp's response in a compact, desk-friendly enclosure

Who Should Choose This Combo

This instrument is the right choice for home players and gigging guitarists who need a single amp covering clean Fender-style tones, classic British crunch, and modern high-gain without swapping pedals. Intermediate players get a 33-preset learning library; tone tweakers get Tone Room. The headphone output supports late-night tracking, and the optional VFS5 footswitch enables hands-free preset switching. Players can also utilize Tone Room for advanced preset management.

VOX Heritage and the Valvetronix Lineage

VOX's amplifier story stretches back to the late 1950s, when the AC30 became the sound of British Invasion guitar. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, and Radiohead have all built iconic tones on VOX circuits. The Valvetronix series has long paired tube character with digital flexibility, and the VTX generation adds VET modeling and Tone Room to that lineage.
